FAQs
What exactly is a doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical and emotional support, and evidence-based information to a birthing person and their family before, during, and shortly after childbirth. We do not provide medical care, but rather complement the care you receive from your healthcare providers.
What are the benefits of having a doula?
Research shows (examples here) that when informed and well supported (by a non-medical person or member of family) through labour and birth, birthing parents are:
More likely to have vaginal births
Less likely to have interventions
More likely to have shorter labours and to be more successful with breastfeeding
More likely to be satisfied with the outcome of their birth
At a reduced risk of postnatal depression
What's the difference between a doula and a midwife/obstetrician?
Midwives and doctors are medical professionals who provide clinical care, monitor your health and the baby's health, perform medical procedures, and deliver the baby. A doula provides non-medical support, focusing on your comfort, emotional well-being, advocacy, and informed decision-making throughout your pregnancy and birth journey. We work with your medical team, not in place of them.
When should I hire a doula?
It's never too early or too late to consider hiring a doula! Many clients hire me during their second trimester, which allows ample time for antenatal visits and building a relationship. However, Iām happy to discuss your needs at any point in your pregnancy.
Do you only support natural/unmedicated births?
Absolutely not! I support all types of births, whether you're planning an unmedicated birth, an epidural, a planned caesarean, or anything in between. My goal is to support your choices and help you have a positive and empowered birth experience, whatever that looks like for you.
Do you support partners?
Yes! A common misconception is that a doula replaces the partner. In reality, I support partners by offering suggestions, giving them breaks, and helping them feel more confident and involved in the birth process. I can help them understand what's happening and how they can best support you.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes, I understand that investing in doula support is a significant decision. I am happy to discuss flexible payment plans and sliding scale fees to make my services accessible to more families.
What is shared care?
If I am not available for any part of your on-call period, or you would feel more at ease with two doulas, I also offer shared care with one of my wonderful and skilled colleagues. This means you get to know and have the expertise of two doulas during your pregnancy, and either of us may attend your birth, providing continuity of care and no last-minute surprises.
What areas do I cover?
I'm based in Bristol and work with families across the city, including Clifton, Redland, Southville, Bishopston, Bedminster, Stoke Bishop, Westbury Park and the surrounding neighbourhoods. I also cover Bath and the wider areas of Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.
If you're not sure whether I cover your area, get in touch. I'm happy to discuss travel for the right fit.
All courses and sessions are available online too, so if you're further afield or simply prefer the flexibility of working from home, we can still work together wherever you are in the UK.
